What interferes with people getting started
with counseling?
There are a number of possibilities. Someone may be just unfamiliar with what counseling is. They never went to a counselor and do not know anyone (family or friends) who have. So it is more of a fear of the unknown. Perhaps they are afraid of feeling criticized/judged for their behavior, thoughts, feelings etc. The purpose of counseling is to provide people with a better understanding of themselves and the links between their thoughts, feelings, and behavior. Sometimes people in need of counseling are feeling so hopeless that they cannot imagine someone/something being helpful. It is like wearing a pair of sun glasses, everything appears darker. Some people see themselves as self reliant and it is difficult to ask someone for assistance. Asking for help feels like a sign of weakness. However it actually takes strength and courage to initiate counseling and buckle down and focus on solving one’s problems.
